Carol Schram: More questions than answers for Vancouver Canucks after 6-0 loss to Oilers The Vancouver Canucks are still looking for ways to score goals and better defensive structure as they look toward the end of preseason after a 6-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

Don't get too down. You're going to have a lot of these written this year.

And the good stuff is fully legal on the 17th so you only need to suffer through 2 weeks of hockey.

Last year, we saw Jim Benning trade for Derrick Pouliot on October 3, one day before the beginning of the 2017-18 regular season. I wonder if he'll be able to swing a deal to improve his roster before opening night.

I seen something on Twitter from Friedman suggesting some team struggling with the PP might have interest in Tim Heed who is a RHD and scored 11 pts in 29 games with the Sharks last year 3 goals.

Pouliot was about to be put on waivers by the Penguins (says various Pens bloggers/writers) to make room on their opening night roster. IF Benning can do the same with some of the guys who he thinks he will have to waive, or could lose to waivers, he should try and see what's out there.

If he's on the market I think there will be a lot more teams that are willing to give up more than the Canucks should be willing.

Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina, Tampa, NJ all seem to have a higher need and are in a more pressing situation than Vancouver.

I hope this mgmt group is okay letting some underwhelming players go as there will likely be some guys worth taking a chance on via the waiver wire or trade.

A RH one. Apparently there are rumours of a Faulk trade being a matter of time so having a secondary RH brought in isn't a bad move for insurance.

A Faulk move has been rumored for quite some time. I don't think it happens anytime soon but perhaps you are right.

We will never know the full story, as the Pens would never outright say that they needed to put someone on waivers, after they make a trade, but at the time, they needed to make room for a healthy defensive. Pens bloggers/writers had said that they were healthy with:

Letang - Dumoulin
Maata - Cole
Schultz - Daley
Hainsey - Streit

Derrick Pouliot is horrible. He shuns contact, gives the puck away and is always out of position. He should be waived - at least give Ollie minutes for the development we have all been sold....

Nice back check by Ericsson on the first goal - I wonder if Green is going to give him the defense first speech and then bench Goldie. What a joke.

No, you misunderstand, I fully believe the Pens were going to put him on waivers, which is why throwing in the extra 4th was so bizarre. I just donā€™t think Jim has the capibility to make that same kind of trade - get something for a player they have no room for. I think itā€™s much more likely he trades something (a pick) for another meh dman who isnā€™t going to make their current teams roster.

It will be interesting to see how patient Aquaman is to start the season, our schedule in October is horrendous and this team seems primed to stumble out the gates.

What's our record for the first 14 games.

1-10-3 is my guess.

I thought it was a stupid move at first, but after, it somewhat made sense. Benning didn't/wouldn't know who was going on waivers. He thought there would be a decent chance that the 5 teams with waiver priority over him could take a claim on Pouliot (assuming the 5 teams that placed worse in the standings, had worse D). The price to assure Jim was going to get DP was a roster contract and a 4th. I still don't think he should have EVER wasted any picks on these reclamation projects, but at the same time, I do understand his logic. He is taking gambles on trying to improve the worst D in the league, at a semi-quick pace.

My guess is this......the 4th was thrown in for 2 reasons...

1) The assurance that they would get Pouliot. Perhaps they were interested in him enough that they feared a team like Buffalo, who had a higher waiver spot, would have claimed him on waivers also.

2) Pedan also had to clear waivers and the 4th was added in just in case Pedan got claimed on waivers

Not really that difficult to see why JB would have added a 4th, not to mention, Pouliot is a player and Pedan is not.

Itā€™s preseason, this mostly veteran team knows what it takes to win and they will put their best foot forward once the games actually mean something. They guys are sitting back and trying to allow the young guys to have a little glory, which obviously isnā€™t working, but come regular season they will put the hammer down.

I don't blame JB for taking a chance with a 4 th rounder last year, but if he made the same mistake this year that is a different issue.
